I wish there were more interactions with these characters. The father works hard to maintain the business anyway he can, while the son almost up-ends everything by frequently getting in trouble with the law. Each character has normal and crime outfits they wear, so that they mask the bad deeds they do. There’s a bit of Grand Theft Auto V‘s three protagonist system here, but no freedom of choice as to when you get to play as them. Crowntakers is very much like an arcade strategy game in that way. The lack of a proper story in Crowntakers doesn’t really help the matter, as the brief narrative interludes do nothing to make you feel connected to this world or your characters, nor put much thought into their demise beyond the annoyance of starting over. It’s that element that gives these games their gambling-like addictiveness, but when compared to a SRPG masterpiece such as Fire Emblem you do lose some of that emotional investment and those moments where you are forced to use true strategic wit to make sure your companions live, or decide if one must die in order to find victory. The right series of events can propel a player to victory on their first attempt, whereas the wrong roll of the dice along the way can undue it in an instant. ![]() ![]() While the unpredictable nature of those elements can be intoxicating, it does mean that Crowntakers is much more heavily dependent on luck to survive. Whereas both Fire Emblem and Crowntakers both present a likely SRPG world where death looms around every corner and cannot be undone, only the later makes full use of those traditional rouge-like elements. Yet, for all of Crowntakers brilliant choices of inspiration, disappointingly the one it failed to draw sufficient influence from, is Fire Emblem. Every step of your journey feels fresh, and it is truly addictive to attempt to overcome the odds in order to see the game through to its multiple endings. Your journey through its cartoony medieval world (which is visually pleasing, if not overtly impressive) has all the epicness of an RPG, but the gameplay isn’t nearly as tiresome as some of the more traditional RPGs can sometimes become. Playing without the fear of true consequences ruins much of the appeal of playing this game at all.īut in its proper perm-death state, Crowntakers is a true joy. It’s an obvious attempt to not scare off new players with the imposing notion of losing everything, and while the fact the easier setting is optional means it doesn’t greatly hinder the experience, I couldn’t possibly recommend the easy version of Crown Takers to anyone but the incredibly nubile or timid. One starts you from the beginning of the game at level one, and the other allows you to start over with everything you earned. This is because Crowntakers makes the interesting decision to two difficulty levels. All the resources, levels, companions and skills you’ve acquired along the way will prove to be for naught, as you start from the beginning of the game with nothing you didn’t have the first time you booted the app up. Each step of your journey can bring with it an unexpected occurrence for both good and ill, and should you be unable to meet the challenge that shows itself and your hero falls, the game is over. Where this time tested method of strategy gaming gets to shine-through is in the inclusion of those rogue-like elements. Those battles play out much like the aforementioned classic Final Fantasy Tactics in that you maneuver your characters around a battlefield and make use of their unique abilities to win the day, or at least survive to see another. Much like FTL, you are set forth on a multipath journey, where time is a resource and each stop can bring about a random event, a shop or service to use your accumulated funds at or a battle with all manners of foes. Understanding how the game plays is quite simple if you are at all familiar with its influences. I’m happy to report then that Crowntakers does much to realize the full potential of its ambitious pedigree. Properly done the resulting experience could be something truly great. Its promise of combing the rogue-like genre with a turn based strategy experience similar to Final Fantasy Tactics was a tantalizing notion. Going into Crowntakers, I had hoped it would be one of those successes. However for every disappointment, there exists a substantial amount of games that get the recipe just right. Sometimes, much like your mother’s tuna surprise casserole recipe, the medley turns out to be all hype. There’s been an upswing of hybrid video games in recent years, which all aim to combine multiple genres or gameplay concepts into a singular experience. ![]() For one who enjoys crime dramas, such as Law and Order, or other such entertainment, this collection of the real-life experiences of an undercover agent is fun and entertaining. In 1998, William Queen was a veteran law enforcement agent with a lifelong love of motorcycles and a lack of patience with paperwork. That said, the book was fun to read in some places, and is not bad as a light read. This is a book for those would would like to hear stories from a former law-enforcement professional similar to what one might hear in a bar over a few beers, rather than a scholarly or otherwise carefully researched account. Many of the stories are not presented in great detail, most likely as a result of an attempt to not include classified details or other information that could be detrimental to US national security, but this creates a breeziness and casualness that while simple to read is much less satisfying than an in-depth account with well-researched historical detail would be. The author describes stories from his experience as an FBI undercover agent, which is both extensive and broad. This is a very easy read, as the sentences are short and concrete, sometimes giving the impression that they were transcribed through dictation. ![]() Overall, McGowan's book has much to offer, but is probably only worthwhile for people with a great degree of interest in the subject. People interested in FBI undercover operations should check out The Pretender by Marc Ruskin before turning to this book. This book is engaging, but ultimately disappointing. It is disappointing that McGowan does not reflect on the dilemmas facing law enforcement officers in the United States and how they can be overcome. This book was written in 2017, in the midst of protests against law-enforcement confrontations with the public that ended violently. McGowan also could have reflected on how law enforcement has changed over the past 35 years. If McGowan was so disappointed in management for his entire career, why did he never pursue promotions to ASAC or SAC, or positions in the Criminal Division at FBI HQ? His lack of respect for management and leadership is readily apparent, but he seems to have had no desire to take on challenging positions that he seemingly felt he was more qualified to hold. McGowan should have let his story and experiences, personally and with leadership, speak for themselves. While McGowan has a great story to tell, the narrative over-relies on police-officer cliches and gripes about supervisors and management. His experience and competency speaks for itself and the fast-paced story, covering 30+ years of experience, keeps the reader engaged. McGowan has many great stories to tell about his time undercover. Ghost is the ultimate insider's account of one of the most iconic institutions of American government, and a testament to the incredible work of the FBI. Along the way, we meet his partners and colleagues at the FBI, who pull together for everything from bank jobs to the Boston Marathon bombing case, mafia dons, and, perhaps most significantly, El Chapo himself and his Sinaloa Cartel. McGowan infiltrates groups at home and abroad, assembles teams to create the myths he lives, concocts fake businesses, coordinates the busts, and helps carry out the arrests. Ghost is an unparalleled view into how the FBI, through the courage of its undercover Special Agents, nails the bad guys. In this extraordinary and unprecedented book, McGowan will take readers through some of his biggest cases, from international drug busts, to the Russian and Italian mobs, to biker gangs and contract killers, to corrupt unions and SWAT work. ![]() ![]() Over the course of his career, McGowan has worked more than 50 undercover cases. PC had always been a member of DOJ and he helped build something that Jeff, BAB, Ryan, etc. Things started going sideways with the move to FiveM with DOJ. His departure was not a huge surprise and he's gone off to do what he wants and he's happy doing it, so there's nothing else to that aspect of this scenario. You always got the sense that he treated it at as a hobby rather than a job which stood in contrast to that of the other CZG members. Zach, on the other hand, never came across as being one to dedicate himself solely to YouTube. Once they started regularly doing GTA series at the end of 2014 and into 2015, Jeff, PC, and BAB really started taking off. Sorry for the rambling, Im sitting in the library waiting for people to show up and I just started typing. I also find it weird that buggs talked about recording issues he had, and his solution was to buy a new computer, now I am no genius when it comes, to recording gameplay on a pc, but it feels like a whole new computer is a bit overkill. And it seems like buggs has gone through a really rough time, but the biggest questions I have isn't whether when/if he will make content again or whatever, but if he still lives in Florida, if he got a new job, etc. But I do feel bad for Jeff and I assume polecat and others get the same questions about buggs all the time. Plus basically the only stuff we have heard about buggs since like august has only made more questions. That would be really exciting for me atleast, then just to basically never hear from the person again. But moving across the country is pretty expensive, and he is still getting money from his old videos, but did he get a new job? Or is he just sitting on the money he made from the years of youtube. I always wonder if buggs still lives there, or in Florida at all, I know Jeff just recently moved out of that house and somewhere else, according to what I saw on his Snapchat. Partially weird is Buggs move across the country and down the street for where Jeff, Nichole, and Dave were living. On top of that, I'm actually a fan of the moves the Jets made in the offseason and I believe they've set Wilson up to have some success. I'm not the biggest Wilson fan, but I wasn't the biggest Justin Herbert fan either, and look how that turned out.Īt this point in the draft, I couldn't pass up the potential of having an immediate 10+ year starter in a superflex league. That's a recipe for success in the NFL and especially in an offense that has needed a bell-cow back since Le'Veon Bell left town. Harris is a powerful back with some wiggle that also catches the ball out of the backfield well. Although this is a superflex league, there's still obvious value that comes with securing a legitimate three-down back. I'm a huge fan of this pick since Fields was my #2 quarterback going into the draft. "Fields gives immediate rushing upside and joins a decent enough team that he can be a solid contributor as a QB2 right off the bat."
